Obesity Network Talks Now Online

As we are now well into the middle of the 4th Annual Obesity Boot Camp, a 9-day training camp for young obesity researchers, covering all aspects of obesity research from cell biology to city building, I am happy to announce two important new additions to the Canadian Obesity Network’s internet presence: 1) Posting of over 20 oral presentations from the recent 1st Canadian Obesity Summit, Kananaskis, May 4-9, 2009 2) Online portal for CON-RCO’s Award-winning CONDUIT magazine which allows online viewing and download of past issues. Feed back on these new offerings are very much appreciated. AMS Dushesnay, Quebec

University of Alberta Obesity Research Report

Since joining the University of Alberta in September of 2007 as Chair in Obesity Research and Management, I continue to be amazed by the breadth of obesity research happening at this institution. Over the past year, my chair has tried to pull together and summarize the extraordinary range of obesity-related research ongoing right here in Edmonton. The results are impressive: currently more than 50 University of Alberta faculty hold funding for obesity-related projects – themes range from cell biology to city building. The report, “Giving a Face to Obesity Research”, estimates that University of Alberta researchers currently hold around $35 Million in funding for obesity-related projects – impressive by any measure. In the foreword to the report, which was officially released to the press today, Lorne Babiuk, Vice President of Research, states, “Researchers and clinicians, in a wide range of disciplines, are exploring new treatments and management strategies for children and adults with excess weight. This publication highlights a few of these researchers whose collective efforts are contributing to solving one of the greatest health problem facing the world today.” To download a PDF of the report click here. Like Father, Like Daughter

Regular readers of these pages know that I rarely mention personal stuff on this blog. Today is an exception, as I would like to plug my daughter Linnie’s new blog, which I am sure many of you may find of interest (some of you may actually have suffered through her Pilates sessions at the recent Obesity Summit). Linnie’s blog, which she calls “Don’t Reduce me to Eye Candy” (or Dr Eye Candy for short) is about peoples’ obsession with beauty and body shape. Growing up with a dad, who deals with obesity as a profession, it is not totally unexpected that Linnie has her own thoughts and ideas on this topic. Of course, having a degree in Communication Studies from McMaster University (Hamilton) and a diploma in Marketing Management from Humber College (Toronto), means that she’s actually learnt how to bring a point across. As her dad, of course, I am convinced that she’s got enough natural talent and insights to make her mark – but, then again, I am just the dad – so go ahead and read for yourself… AMS Edmonton, Alberta

Thanks to All for Making the Canadian Obesity Summit Such a Spectacular Success

Words would not do justice to describing the fantastic vibes and enthusiasm emanating from the almost 500 delegates attending the 1st National Obesity Summit – my thanks go out to the Canadian Obesity Network staff, volunteers, organizing committee, members, board, sponsors, and all of the many speakers and presenters for making this such a spectacular success. Congratulations to all the award winners! Hopefully all of this will translate into a better understanding of obesity, effective prevention policies and improved access to obesity treatments.  A special thanks to The Consonance for their great music and to the the staff of the Delta Resort for their friendly and professional support. Click here to read what Yoni Freedhoff, speaker and attendee at the Summit, had to say about it on his blog Weighty Matters. Hope to see all of you again (and everyone who missed this one) at the 2nd National Obesity Summit, April 28-May 1, 2011 in Montreal. Be there or be square!
