Nutritional Hygiene

In my conversations with patients and colleagues, I often speak of “nutritional hygiene”. By this, I do not mean washing your hands before preparing, serving or eating food. I also do not use this term in the context of food safety. Rather, I use the term “nutritional hygiene” in the context of healthy diets.

To me, nutritional hygiene means eliminating “empty” calories, reducing high-energy density foods, avoiding liquid calories and increasing your intake of wholesome proteins, complex carbohydrates and fibres - or in other words: eating a health diet.

I believe that nutrional hygiene is a subject that needs to be thought in schools and that needs to be abided by anyone responsible for “feeding the public”.

Remember: drive-by restaurants have probably killed more people than drive-by shootings!
