Nutritional Hygiene

In my conversations with patients and colleagues, I often speak of “nutritional hygiene”. By this, I do not mean washing your hands before preparing, serving or eating food. I also do not use this term in the context of food safety. Rather, I use the term “nutritional hygiene” in the context of healthy diets.

To me, nutritional hygiene means eliminating “empty” calories, reducing high-energy density foods, avoiding liquid calories and increasing your intake of wholesome proteins, complex carbohydrates and fibres - or in other words: eating a health diet.

I believe that nutrional hygiene is a subject that needs to be thought in schools and that needs to be abided by anyone responsible for “feeding the public”.

Remember: drive-by restaurants have probably killed more people than drive-by shootings!

Weight stigma can itself increase weight gain: study

Jan. 26, 2012 Montreal Gazette – Dr. Arya Sharma, scientific director of the Canadian Obesity Network, says it's clear Western culture needs to stop stigmatizing weight gain and start understanding what causes it. "If we don't stop looking at obesity as a character flaw instead of a complex health condition, then we won't be addressing the underlying issues. Shaming, blaming and taxing aren't constructive or positive strategies." Read the article
