Arya M. Sharma, MD/PhD, FRCPC

Dr. Arya M. Sharma, MD/PhD, FRCPC is Professor of Medicine & Chair in Obesity Research and Management at the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada. He is also the Medical Director of Alberta Health Services Edmonton Region’s interdisciplinary Weight Wise Program and the Clinical Co-Chair of the Alberta Health Services Obesity Initiative.

Dr. Sharma is also the founder and Scientific Director of the Canadian Obesity Network, a network of over 6000 obesity researchers, health professionals and other stakeholders.

He is also the Past-President of the Canadian Association of Bariatric Physicians and Surgeons.

His past appointments include positions as Professor of Medicine and Canada Research Chair (Tier 1) at McMaster University (2002-2007), Professor of Medicine at the Franz-Volhard Klinik - Charité, Humboldt University Berlin (2000-2002) and the Free University of Berlin (1994-2000). His research focuses on the evidence-based prevention and management of obesity and its complications.

He has authored and co-authored more than 300 scientific articles and has lectured widely on the etiology and management of obesity and related cardiovascular disorders. Dr. Sharma is regularly featured as a medical expert in national and international TV and print media including the CBC, CTV, New York Times, and MSNBC.

Weight stigma can itself increase weight gain: study

Jan. 26, 2012 Montreal Gazette – Dr. Arya Sharma, scientific director of the Canadian Obesity Network, says it's clear Western culture needs to stop stigmatizing weight gain and start understanding what causes it. "If we don't stop looking at obesity as a character flaw instead of a complex health condition, then we won't be addressing the underlying issues. Jan. 17, 2012 National Post – “What I always tell people is ‘obesity is not a four-letter word,’” said Dr. Sharma, who is also professor of medicine and chairman in obesity research and management at the University of Alberta. “They don’t look at it as a medical definition, which of course it is [since it’s a] BMI-based definition.
