Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Dr Sharma - Why does it seem more difficult to lose weight each time you diet?

Each time you lose weight, your body goes into starvation mode and optimizes its ability to store extra calories. Each time you lose weight, you not only lose fat, but also some muscle mass. When you stop the diet, your body rapidly builds back the fat stores, and often leaves you with less muscle than you had to start with. Because it is the muscle that burns the energy, you will find that your body actually needs less calories to maintain the same body weight that you had before your diet. This means that the next time you diet, you will have to reduce your calorie intake even more drastically to get the same amount of weight loss that you got the last time you were on a diet. That is why many people find that diets that may have worked before no longer work for them.
