Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Dr Sharma - Why do I feel hungry soon after a meal?

Simply stated, the feeling of hunger signals the lack of sugar in your blood stream. When blood sugar levels drop, you sense that feeling of hunger that is instantly relieved by eating food. This often happens when you eat so called high glycemic foods, or foods that are rapidly digested. These foods quickly raise the level of blood sugar, in response your pancreas produces produces large amounts of insulin, which drives the sugar into cells thereby rapidly lowering your lowering your blood sugar levels. This causes the sensation of hunger, reducing the glycemic load, but also eating foods that are more difficult to digest, like whole grains with more fibre can make you feel more full longer than after eating foods that are easy to digest and have a high glycemic load and they just leave you longing for more.
